Once Bitten, Twice Shy

Baby packs a mean bite.

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (1996), 1 out of 10 toddlers will engage in biting activity.  But that served as little comfort when working with my own "biter" who did not resemble the peaceful RIE or Montessori creature I had envisioned parenting.  After a decade of experience with this reoccurring theme, here's what we know and what we don't know.

Making Dollar and Cents out of Character Development

In less than two weeks some of us will experience the magic of Jonathan Wolff as he presents his life's work via "The Self-Awakened Child" in an intimate gathering to be hosted at the New School. The upcoming evening is a daily topic of excitement for us die-hards, especially as we delve deeper into the intricacies of relationship based care and the power of character development.

My Slow to Warm Child

Those of you who have one will appreciate this…..Changes in routine, transitions, new people, things out of order and noises are enough to stop a fearful (aka “slow to warm”) child in his tracks in a frozen panic.  It’s enough to break your heart or get you very irritated after several years of it!

Attaching in a Dis-Connected World

Recent studies have brought us in contact with Richard Bowlby and his work on attachment, specifically for children being cared for by adults other than their mothers.  Much of his work and theories presented by his father regarding Attachment Theory are supported in the implementation of RIE.  Whew-  glad to know we're on the right path.

Finding Balance in a Busy Schedule

As a working parent, I have learned how to sneak in quality moments with each of my children through a busy day.  While including a child in the many things we do during the day, it is possible to slow down to appreciate the child’s perspective and to allow time for your child to emotionally refuel with you.

Chicken Little meets the Little Red Hen

If one was to tune in to your media outlet of choice, you could seriously conclude that the sky is, in fact, falling.  Global warming, Middle East unrest, famine, continued nuclear armament, U.S. failing schools- feel free to insert gloom of choice here.

Dinner time: It’s More than a Tradition!

Family meals together?  Who has the time?!  Here are a few reasons to do it each day…..You’ll never get this time back and it’s that important!

The Root of All Evil

Those of you who know me know that I've suggested that t.v. watching is detrimental to our children's learning experience.  In fact, we've even suggested that even if you support our "no t.v." policy by refraining at your home, your child may still be affected by the television watching of a friend within his/her school community.

Humor me a bit on this one...

Pack -n- Go

Remember when walking out the door was that simple act of walking out the door?  Now it involves a mad dashes around the house and a check list.  Take today for example:

water bottles - check

mid-morning snack for three - check

sunscreen - check

bugspray - check

bathing suits - check

soccer ball - check

birthday gift - check

sanitizer - check

kleenex - check

Love on the Rocks

Little Learner's Lodge and Montessori of Mount Pleasant - South Carolina

The most pleasant part of my day today was watching two 3-year olds at play.

I became curious when I noticed a boy and girl hanging out on the playground for the first time and really enjoying themselves.  Usually, he's off with the guys while she's more apt to be with her two BFF.  But there they were, Super Hero meets his Princess for the very first time.
